The Routes

Piedras Blancas Route - 35 Miles

The Piedras Blancas Route is the most unique course offered at Eroica California. After a quick tour of Cambria, riders head north along California’s most beautiful coastline. Just past San Simeon, Hearst Castle stands out in the mountains to the east.  Also, watch for zebra, Tule elk and elephant seals on the way to the historic Piedras Blancas lighthouse. After an exquisite rest stop on the lighthouse grounds, enjoy a nice tailwind back to Cambria.

Approximately 35 miles – 1500’ of climbing ~ 5 miles of gravel roads

Santa Lucia Route - 75 Miles

New for 2019, the Santa Lucia Route gives riders (Eroici) an opportunity to experience the beauty of fatigue along the California coastline and the thrill of the conquest in the mountains of the Santa Lucia Range.  Riders will have an ideal warm up heading south from our new host city of Cambria to the seaside village of Cayucos. After a brief stop the first challenge awaits, the strade bianche of Santa Rita Creek road. Following a technical descent, riders will pass through the heart of the Central Coast’s wine country to reach a well-deserved rest stop at Halter Ranch Vineyards. The final obstacle along the Medium Route is the steep ascent of Cypress Mountain road followed by a 2000’ white-knuckle descent back to Cambria. Be sure to bring your granny gears and your 28mm tires. This 75mile ride is very challenging and you will earn your post ride meal.

Approximately 75 miles – 5700’ of climbing ~ 20 miles of gravel roads

La via dello scalatore - 82 Miles

Previously known as the Coastal Route, La Via della Scalatore has all of the highlights that Eroica California is known for. Scalatore is Italian for climber and this route takes in all the major strade bianche ascents featured in the Heroic ride without the all the distance. Riders will have a nice warm up as they head south to the seaside village of Cayucos.  After a brief stop, the strade bianche of Santa Rita Creek road awaits. Following the 10km climb and technical descent, riders will pass through the town of Templeton, in the heart of the Central Coast’s wine country, before encountering the infamous Kiler Canyon. This steep, narrow section of gravel road has forced even the most seasoned riders to succumb to walking. A well-deserved rest at Halter Ranch Vineyards can’t arrive soon enough. Don’t get too comfortable as the final obstacle of Cypress Mountain road is just around the corner. After conquering the steep, twisty climb, enjoy the 2000’ white-knuckle descent back to Cambria where riders can finally relax and enjoy the Eroica Festival, fine refreshments and coastal sunset.
